Welcome To The New
Local Government Compliance!

Our State Of Compliance - Over the last three years, local government has truly been awakened to the clarion calls of Privacy & Security!  With the deadlines for HIPAA Privacy, Security, & Transactions now past, those governments that understood the requirements have done extraordinary jobs at protecting the information of their constituents, and moving to new business models.  To those who embraced HIPAA fully, we salute you!  However, your job is not done!  Not only do you have to continue to assess and correct, but other regulations have to be understood as well.

Now It's GLBA! - The Gramm-Leach Bliley Act is another Privacy & Security regulation set that covers every segment of our nation, and local government is NOT exempt either!

Is your government required to be compliant under GLBA?  Most are, through their financial activities oriented towards individuals:

  • Assistance Grants processing.
  • Assistance & Benefit Payments to individuals.
  • Employee Benefits Management.

However, now that HIPAA's Security deadline is behind us, most local governments have failed to fully comply!  How many local governments will wait as they did last time?  The HIPAA Security Rule is nothing short of a complete best practices approach, and will require every bit as much effort as did the Privacy Rule.  Now is the time to begin!  If you are looking for a partner that both understands local governments and best practices security, click here.

HIPAA Covered Components - While many are in decent shape with HIPAA overall, many have used far too limited a criteria set to identify their covered components.  Here is a list of departments to consider:

  • Community Services
  • Human Services
  • Indigent Healthcare
  • Health cost grants
  • Non-emergency Medical Transit
  • Veteran's Services
  • Elderly Nutrition Programs
  • Emergency Services (EMT)
  • County/City Jail Clinic
  • Clerk of Court (Business Associate)
  • Information Technology (BA)
  • Courier & Facilities (BA)

In each case an assessment must be done to make a final determination, however, these have been found to be covered throughout the U.S.  Also, as a rule, if it bills Medicaid, it's probably a covered component.
